My Style, Experience, and Credentials

Through time and experience it has become apparent that one style or therapy technique does not fit the needs of all clients. With this premise in mind I create a customized approach for each client after a thorough assessment of the clients current issues and needs. The client and I will then mutually create a plan that best fits your needs. From this we will integrate techniques from the schools of emotional, cognitive, body centered, and behavioral therapies that best address and resolve the issue at hand. These interventions will include both in session, experiential practices as well as home practice assignments that allow the client to integrate the changes for the long-term. These may include journaling, breath work, and practicing new behaviors to interrupt and transform old ways of thinking, feeling and behaving. I feel therapy is a collaborative relationship that requires both the client and therapist to be upfront and honest in order to have a successful relationship. For this reason I prefer not to keep the therapeutic process a mystery — but rather be upfront and provide you with my style and techniques so you can become comfortable right from the start. Therapy is generally about creating change, which requires a mutual exchange of energy to create and sustain long-term change. If you are willing to trust the process and use the information and tools that we cover in session you can count on things changing and transforming in your life.

I believe it is essential for a counselor to be fully invested and active in his or her own personal growth. The personal experience combined with the right training seems to create the safe and understanding environment needed to effectively meet a client's needs. I also believe that having walked through your own personal growth creates the empathy and understanding that is essential to all relationships. I know I would not be as effective as I am in private practice and personal relationships without my own experience of ongoing growth and the internal transformation that can occur in therapy.

I firmly believe that a client, as an educated consumer has the full right to ask questions and work with a therapist who best serves the clients needs. I prefer to meet with someone in person to get a sense of a good fit. My intent is to be a resource, help you resolve your challenges, and assist you create the life you want. Whether it is in person or over the phone please feel free to call me with any questions and when you're ready we can set up a time to get together.
